Mount Uhud

The mountain that loves us.

Story

Mount Uhud is the biggest, tallest mountain near Madinah. It is reddish-brown, has many sharp peaks, and stretches for around seven kilometers. From its base you can see the whole green city. But this mountain is not famous only for its size β€” it is famous because the Prophet ο·Ί said something incredibly sweet about it.

He said: 'Uhud is a mountain that loves us, and we love it.' Can you imagine a mountain that LOVES you? Some scholars say the mountain literally trembled with joy when the Prophet ο·Ί stood on it, and he had to gently calm it down by tapping his foot.

The most famous event here is the Battle of Uhud, which happened in the second year after Hijra. The Muslims came out to defend Madinah from a much bigger army. The Prophet ο·Ί placed 50 archers on a small hill (called the Archers' Hill) and gave a strict order: 'Do not move from this spot β€” no matter what happens!'

At first the Muslims were winning, and the enemy started running away. But most of the archers got excited and left their hill to collect the prizes left behind. That was a big mistake! The enemy cavalry circled back through the empty hill and the Muslims suffered. The Prophet's beloved uncle Hamza (RA) and 70 other brave companions became martyrs that day.

Today, you can visit the bottom of Mount Uhud and see the small white-walled cemetery of the martyrs. Families stand quietly, make du'a, and remember the powerful lesson the Prophet ο·Ί taught us that day: always listen carefully to good instructions, even when things look easy. And if you ever climb a little way up, remember β€” this mountain loves you back!
